The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) is a leading provider of specialist public health services for children and adolescents and is the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria, caring for children from Tasmania and southern New South Wales as well as other states around Australia and overseas.
With approximately 65,000 emergency presentations per year and an admission rate of 24% the services provided by the Royal Children’s are varied and specialised. Included in these are our NETS, PETS, and PICU services.
At RCH we see approximately 1800 trauma related admissions per year and of those 115 patients per year are considered major trauma.
The Royal Children’s is a designated Major Trauma Service (MTS) for the state of Victoria. The MTS’s form the central hub of the integrated VSTS providing a concentration of trauma expertise and definitive care for the majority of major trauma patients in the State. The Royal Children’s Hospital Trauma Service plays an integral role in delivering leadership & support to the VSTS as a whole, through the active involvement in education and performance feedback, implementation of triage policies & clinical protocols, and systems monitoring and research, with emphasis on Paediatric Trauma.
Our NETS and PETS service’s provide a retrieval system for the state of Victoria, as well as education and clinical support to rural areas.
The Trauma Service at the Royal Children’s Hospital also provides support and assistance to rural Victoria through our Paediatric Trauma Seminar Days which are run annually through each region.
