Bendigo Health is a public health facility, with a staff of almost 3000, covering a catchment one quarter the size of Victoria with over 300,000 people.
The acute campus has 225 beds out of a total of 672 beds, made up of five residential, three psychiatric and two sub acute facilities, incorporating rehabilitation, hospice, independent living and geriatric evaluation and management.
The main Bendigo Health site covers three city blocks, close to the Bendigo CBD, incorporating the acute, sub-acute and teaching and research facilities in partnership with Monash and Latrobe Universities. There are five residential and one psychiatric facility off campus in Bendigo and a number of other health services throughout the Loddon Mallee region and beyond, from Gisborne to Mildura.
Almost 30,000 patients were admitted last financial year with a total of 320,000 non-admitted occasions of service. We provided over 500,000 meals and used 1.2 million kg of linen throughout the organisation. Some admissions areas have risen by 24%, such as chemotherapy, gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The Dialysis Unit has increased its renal services by 33% in response to increased demand.
The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state, seeing nearly 44,000 people, an average of 119 people per day. Together with the Critical Care Unit, Bendigo Health’s Emergency Department will be in the unique position of being both a provider and a receiver when the ViTCCU project is launched.
